Avatar (2009)

Movies, Raves 2 Comments »

There is nothing better than going into a movie with the thought that it was praised to the high heavens by even the harshest critics and still come out of the theater saying it was better than they had said.  Avatar simply blew me away. It has been a while since I finished the end credits to a movie, as it has always been a practice of mine to do so when it leaves me in utter awe and applause, and this movie was definitely one of them.

In what was probably the best example of photo-real CG on the big screen to-date, this movie simply blows away anything that has been shown before it. The interactions between the characters and the environment is truly incredible. It’s been a long time since I’ve been so engrossed in a movie and seriously wanted to believe that I was actually part of it, and Avatar certainly took it that far. The world of Pandora was simply amazing and I was in constant awe at how intricate the details were for everything they created in this world.

The storyline is also pretty good. It’s not really a new idea or anything of the sort, but the way the story was developed along with the characters was quite inspiring. The story revolves around a paraplegic marine who was given the chance to walk again through the use of a unique alien body called an Avatar. Fortunately for the main character Jake, his twin-brother had died and he had practically the same bio-stats so he was a perfect fit for his brother’s Avatar.

His job was to gain the trust of the natives, called the Na’vi, so that Parker (played by Giovanni Ribisi) can harvest the precious metal hidden under their lands without having to resort to the destruction of their world. What follows is Jake’s journey as a human that ends in his conversion to the ways of the Na’vi. He learns their ways and realizes in the end that their world is worth saving even if it means betraying humanity in the process.

The portrayal of both Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) at first seemed rather eerie, but as the movie goes on, it seemed to be rather apt for the entire plot. Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) was played to a tee by the star of Alien, and there were actually scenes where I was expecting the Alien to come out and kill her, hehe. The cast was great although I’m not a big  fan of Ribisi and he didn’t do anything in this movie to make me change my mind either. The total package still made this movie one heck of a hit. And I have to say, if you watch the trailer on TV and look at the pictures, it does this movie no justice, and is a far cry from seeing it on the big screen. So please, move your butt to the theater as it is well worth it.

Thinking back at the batch of great movies this year, I think this one is the best of 2009. Avatar is simply epic. I would strongly recommend for you to watch this in the big screen as DVD’s played in your flat screen will do the movie, and yourself, a great injustice. My only regret is that I wasn’t able to watch this in 3D yesterday but I definitely WILL. You should do the same :) Kudos to James Cameron and his crew for creating Avatar! This isn’t a movie you can just talk about, you have to go see it.

Craig’s List Manila Employment

Humor No Comments »

I’ve heard quite a few nasty things about how Craig’s List has gone overboard with their classifieds and personals but my wife showed me two ads earlier which was actually quite hilarious. To think that this was on the Services section is insane! So now I’m actually reading the Erotic Services section and it’s a WINNER. I didn’t know there were such great employment rates here! Hahaha!

Honestly, I’m quite shocked that the Erotic Section has actually turned out to be some kind of pimping service and is actually bordering on prostitution. No sorry, let me correct that, has BECOME a prostitution service. I’m not sure why it’s being allowed though, I’m sure we have laws for this in the country.

Pacquiao’s Funniest Video

Humor, Sports No Comments »

It’s always great to see a world champion laugh and kid like he’s just like everyone else. And while the news of his affair with Krista Ranillo are making more waves these days than his recent historical win against Miguel Cotto, here’s a hilarious look at the real Manny Pacquiao.

Manny Pacquiao and Matt Isetan
Here’s a candid interview he did with Matt Iseman of Sports Soup before his match against Cotto. I was shocked, honestly, at what he was saying, though it didn’t come out bad at all because he was acting like a crazy kid who had no care in the world and was having some good old “clean” fun. Asked by Iseman whether Manny drinks his urine just like Marquez did, Manny quipped “that’s why he wants a rematch because it was a mistake. He just drink his urine but he forgot to eat his.. his… ASS!”

Manny Laughing
Bwahahahaha! I’m sure if someone else did this, they’d be getting a ton of slack for it and it wouldn’t be anywhere near this funny. Video is from YouTube and the link is below. How can you not love this guy?!

Pacquiao now Legendary: Pummels Cotto via 12th Round TKO

Sports 1 Comment »

Pacquiao Triumphant AgainI have never been a HUGE fan of Manny Pacquiao until I watched him get ready to walk down the ring to fight against a bigger Miguel Cotto and inevitably slay another Goliath for a 12th Round TKO to win an unprecedented 7th division title. His latest triumph catapulted him as one of the best boxers of all-time. Yes, of ALL-TIME, that’s how historic Pacquiao’s achievements are. Pretty good coming from a scrawny 106 pound Pinoy who started boxing at the age of 16, huh? (see the link below for a video by TIME on the Rise of Manny Pacquiao)

With a huge smile on his face, seemingly unfazed and distracted by the raucous full capacity crowd of 16,200 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Pacquiao walked down the ring confidently like nothing was riding on the bout that was about to commence. Miguel Cotto, on the other hand, looked like any other boxer out there with a face and demeanor that could kill. But just like all the other bigger, meaner-looking opponents of his, Manny still came out on top in the end, beating his foe with unbelievable quickness and devastating punching power.

Pacquiao vs Cotto
Pacquiao bludgeoned Cotto to submission to the point that his opponent practically ran from him. And the reign of another champion ended in the 12th round via TKO as Manny raised a record 7th different division title. CompuBox actually came out with some stats that showed how lopsided the victory was. Take a look at the chart below:

CompuBox: Pacquiao vs Cotto

And with that, Manny Pacquiao became legendary. Not because of the opponent he beat yet again, but because of holding 7 different titles in 7 different weight categories. That is unprecedented and will probably never be surpassed. And in case you’re curious where it all started, his trek began from flyweight (1), junior featherweight (2), featherweight (3), junior lightweight (4), lightweight (5), junior welterweight (6), and now welterweight (7). And Manny says this will be the last weight division for him to move up to.

Pacquiao vs Cotto

It seems blasphemous to say he is as great as Ali, but when you look at his record and his unique accomplishments, he might just be. I was just a fan before this match, but now I’m glad to say that I’m part of his HUGE fan base not only because of his ability, but also because of his humility in victory and zest for life.

V 2009 Season 1 Episode 1: Pilot

TV No Comments »

V 2009 PosterV 2009 is a highly-anticipated series that finally came out last week. I’ve honestly never heard of this show and it’s apparently a remake of the very popular 80′s series hit. From the very little that I know of it, it’s a sci-fi series about an alien invasion of Earth by a race of reptilians called “The Visitors.”

The cast has no real big names except for 2 of them that I know. Laura Vandervoort (Smallville/Into the Blue) and Scott Wolf (Party of Five). And for a first glimpse, the show seems pretty interesting, at least for now. This Pilot episode makes you wonder who the aliens really are and what their real intentions are. I think the cast they picked was okay enough to keep you glued to your screen so let’s see how the next episode does. It should be out tomorrow.

V 2009
So now I can finally find out what all this talk from my cousins on white mice is about in connection with this series. I can imagine why, but it seems rather strange, not to mention weird, seeing Anna eat white mice, hahaha! We shall see.

House Season 6 Episode 3: The Tyrant

TV No Comments »

House is on its 6th season and after a pretty disappointing first two episodes, they finally came up with a good one. The idea of having House change” and become “better” has always been pretty sketchy as his sarcasm and slyness is the entire draw of the series. But from this 3rd episode, it seems it’s going to be alright after all.

House Funny

The 3rd episode aptly named “the Tyrant” features the timeless James Earl Jones playing President Dibala, a seemingly ruthless ruler who has no problems killing Africans (the Sitibi, in particular) to further change. Some of these people have come to the hospital to warn House and his team and ask them not to heal the dictator. What follows is a challenge in conscience of the team as to whether it would be better for the world to cure Dibala or not. The ending was great and definitely one I never expected to happen.

James Earl Jones in House

On the other, more humorous side, House is being kicked out by Wilson because the resident war hero of the place named Murphy wants him out. House, in his own devious way, finds a way to “appeaseMurphy with his handicap from the war and finally gets him to change his entire attitude totally.

Chase

All in all, this episode was exactly what I was waiting for from this season. James Earl Jones is always a breath of fresh air with that amazing voice of his. And it seems they finally got this episode right.  So I’m hoping this is how it’s going to go in the following episodes after. This is definitely a must-watch. You can download both HD episodes below.  Pictures to follow! Enjoy!
